JOB SUMMARY:
 
The Maintenance Worker is responsible for cleaning and the overall general maintenance of the premises and grounds in order to ensure that indoor and outdoor facilities are in good condition.  The Maintenance Worker carries out repairs, installations and inspections required for the maintenance of the building and other facilities.

RESPONSIBILITIES (But not limited to):
  • Cleans, scrubs, strips and waxes floors in the hallways, stairways, common areas, etc., as instructed, in order to maintain the premises in good condition.
  • Uses a vacuum cleaner or electric broom to remove dirt, dust and garbage in and around the building.
  • Empties out garbage and recycling recipients at regular intervals in order to prevent waste from accumulating, and ensures recycling materials are stored properly.
  • Washes windows, walls and ceilings of offices and other areas, as needed.
  • Removes snow on sidewalks and doors and applies salt to ensure resident, visitor and staff safety.
  • Mows and waters grass, tends to flower gardens and applies fertilizer as needed, to ensure the orderly appearance of the grounds.
  • Performs project work as assigned.
  • Participates on the JOHS Committee.
  • Routinely checks equipment and facilities such as the furnace, alarm system, whirlpool bath, pool, fire extinguishers, etc. to ensure that they are in good working order.
  • Executes general repair and maintenance work including painting, plastering, basic plumbing (e.g. replacing faucets, unblocking toilets), woodworking (e.g. replacing moulding, installing doors, replacing doorframes) and electrical work (tasks that do not require an electrician’s license, e.g. changing light bulbs).
  • Prepares requisitions to purchase the material needed to carry out work and procure maintenance products; processes orders after authorization; checks merchandise upon delivery and maintains inventory.
  • Completes the appropriate forms and documents; writes required reports based on available information in order to ensure the necessary follow-up.
  • Carries out, as required, all related tasks in order to ensure continuity and ongoing quality of service.
  • Workers have several duties under the OHSA, as per Section 28.  A worker must:
  • Work in compliance with the Act and the Regulations.
  • Use or wear any personal protective equipment, devices or clothing required by the employer;
  • Report to the employer, Supervisor or General Manager any hazard, actual or potential, that may be dangerous to themselves, or another worker and any violation of the Act or the Regulations.
  • Not remove or make ineffective any protective device required by the Regulations or their employer;
  • Not engage in any prank, contest, feat of strength, unnecessary running or rough or boisterous conduct or use or operate any equipment, or work in any way that may endanger any worker.
  • Communicates in a professional manner any concerns regarding the home’s environment from residents, families, visitors and staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS:
  • 1-2 years’ experience in a similar position.
  • Must have effective verbal and written English communication skills.
  • Sound knowledge of the operation and maintenance of equipment used in the residence.
  • A sound knowledge of the fundamentals of the services of a maintenance department.
  • Post-secondary education in property maintenance, plumbing, building mechanics or the equivalent.
