POSITION SUMMARY:
The Director of Care (DOC) is accountable to the Administrator for the overall management of the nursing department and resident care services.  Through effective management of all resources in the nursing envelope and the development of a strong nursing team, the DOC will ensure the delivery of optimal care and service, based on legislative requirements and Specialty Care standards.  All roles are essential in providing a safe and healthy environment for patients, staff, physicians, volunteers and others by ensuring that health and safety policies are followed. 
 
MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIRED:
  • Current Certificate of Competence from the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Bachelor of Nursing Science or equivalent post diploma education.
EXPERIENCE NECESSARY:
  • A minimum of three years’ experience in front line management in Long Term Care Facilities.
SKILLS REQUIRED:
  • Demonstrated experience in working as part of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Excellent leadership and communications skills.
  • Sound clinical skills and knowledge of gerontological nursing practice.
  • Exceptional proficiency with WORD, email, internet use and computerized documentation.
  • Sound familiarity with the funding process and the funding indicators.
  • Extensive knowledge of MOHLTC regulations.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provides overall leadership in coordinating all on-site operations ensuring efficient utilization of the human, physical and financial resources.  This is implemented in keeping with North York General Hospital’s and the Long Term Care Program’s mission statements, objectives, policies and procedures.
  • Assumes responsibility for the selection, orientation, evaluation and motivation of all nursing and activation personnel in accordance with the Long Term Care Program’s policies, procedures, and Regulatory Bodies.
  • Provides direction and support in developing, implementing and evaluating systems, policies, procedures and standards for the delivery of resident care ensuring compliance with legislation and accreditation standards.
  • Participates in developing and maintaining the department’s philosophy.
  • Participates in committees as a coach and facilitator and enhances collaborative and positive working relationships with all staff.
  • Ensures nursing staff are scheduled according to resident needs and Ministry of Health Requirements.
  • Develop and re-evaluates the nursing and activation services within the approved budget in consultation with the Administrator, Long Term Care Program.
  • Utilizes quality improvement techniques and on-the-job staff training strategies in promoting developing and reinforcing standards.
  • Ensures compliance with policies to promote safe practices and to protect the health and safety of employees.
  • Advocates for quality care and residents needs within the care team and with others including family members.
  • Assumes administrative responsibilities in the absence of the Administrator, Long Term Care Program.
  • Maintains adequate supplies to meet resident needs.
  • Facilitates positive working relationships with other departments, North York General Hospital, and external bodies to coordinate resident care.
