Associate Director of Care - Ellesmere

The Associate Director of Care (ADOC) ensures that effective nursing services are carried out and by providing staff in the nursing department with education/in-services. The ADOC assists with Quality Assurance activities for the nursing department, including research projects and sharing/serving committees.
Reporting to the Director of Care (DOC), the ADOC must ensure provision of care in accordance with the Standard of Practice of the College of Nurses of Ontario and the Long Term Care Homes Act and Regulations 79/10.

RESPONSIBILITIES (But not limited to):
  • Responsible for implementation of standards of resident care for all nursing areas.
  • Ensures and promotes the provision of resident centered care and services to meet the needs of the resident.
  • Manages the activities related to RAI MDS program, in conjunction with DOC, to ensure RAI MDS Program mandate, standards and needs are facilitated effectively and the program is optimized.
  • Ensures staff comply with the Ministry mandated requirements for AIS Proficiency Evaluations.
  • Provides necessary support to staff in accomplishing their training and evaluation related to AIS Proficiency.
  • Ensure that resident and family needs are addressed and any concerns are handled and brought to the attention of the DOC.
  • Assists with the investigation and follow through of resident, family or staff concerns.
  • Manages, under the direction of the DOC, special initiatives, such as Integrated Assessment Reporting (IAR).
  • Manages and coordinates the planning, implementation, and evaluation of a wide range of Rehabilitation/Restorative Programs, including but not limited to Dining Program, Walking Program, Wheelchair Mobility Program, ADLs, ROM, Strengthening, Fine Motor, 1:1, and small group fitness, based on resident needs, under the direction of the DOC.
  • Oversees and/or assists in completing assessments, development and implementation and evaluation of care plans of residents, under the direction of the DOC, to optimize the resident’s independence in activities of daily living.
  • Supports opportunities for the resident/family participation in decisions that affect the resident’s rights and lifestyle.
  • Use quality tools to assist in determining root cause of issues and subsequent plans of improvement initiatives.
  • Fosters effective interpersonal relationships between residents, families and other interdisciplinary health team members.
  • Responsible for monitoring compliance through audits of the home, care, assessments, resident charts, care plans, MARS, and documentations.
  • Interpret and develop a plan that identifies concerns and corrective action plan and report to the DOC.
  • Research best practices, in conjunction with the DOC, to develop and implement policies and procedures that optimize resident care.
  • Under the direction of the DOC, directs and supervises nursing staff and RAI Coordinators to ensure standards are met.
  • Participates in recruitment, development, evaluation, discipline and termination of nursing staff.
  • Participates in performance appraisal process for staff.
  • Monitors and evaluates that nursing staff are compliant with Leisureworld’s policies and procedures and Ministry standards.
  • Assists in the development, communicates and supervises all aspects of nursing job routines in relation to resident care.
  • Provides demonstrated and written instruction for unfamiliar procedures and equipment for nursing department.
  • Provides continuing education programs to registered and non-registered staff on a monthly basis.
  • Participate in orientation process for employees.
  • Assists with the Return to Work process and/or arranges modified work programs for department employees.
  • Coordinate nursing unit services with other services and liaison with other services in the home, medical services, other professional services (i.e. physician), and external agencies.
  • Act as a reliable member or chair on committees that impact the department.
  • Assists with the development of programs to monitor, evaluate and improve the quality of specialized nursing services.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of policies and procedures related to nursing practice and infection control.
  • Participates in outbreak management and infection control practices.
  • Lead on infection control practice and staff education coordination.
  • Assumes responsibility for the nursing service in the absence of the Director of Care.
  • Assists with the co-ordination of activities pertaining to the Accreditation Program.
  • Comply with all Employee Responsibilities under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Successful annual completion of RAI MDS certification as per MOHLTC requirements for AIS.
  • 3 years’ experience in clinical nursing in a geriatric, long-term care, rehabilitation or chronic care setting.
  • Minimum of 3 years progressive management/leadership experience.
  • Considerable experience in supervising or directing registered and unregulated staff in a long term care environment.
  • Nursing Rehabilitation certificate is an asset.
  • Sound knowledge of Ministry of Health and Long Term Care program standards and ability to ensure compliance with these standards.
  • Strong communication skills both written and verbal required.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve complex problems, and work under pressure with a high degree of professionalism and diplomacy.
  • Demonstrated team building and mentorship experience.
  • Demonstrated commitment to learning and continuous quality improvement.
  • Proven ability to build effective relationships and work productively in a team environment.
  • Proficient computer skills.
  • Must have effective verbal and written English communication skills.
  • Bachelor of Science – Nursing or equivalent from an accredited university  or
  • Diploma in Registered Practical Nursing from an established college or equivalent
  • Current Gerontological Nursing Certificate, through the Canadian Nurses Association, is considered an asset
  • Current AIS Certification considered an asset
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support Certification (BCLS).
