The Associate Director of Care (ADOC) ensures that effective nursing services are carried out and by providing staff in the nursing department with education/in-services. The ADOC assists with Quality Assurance activities, including overseeing, monitoring, and evaluating the operations of the RAI MDS 2.0 Program for the Home for the nursing department, including research projects and sharing/serving committees. The ADOC is the lead in sustaining and coordinating RAI MDS 2.0 within the home.
Reporting to the Director of Care (DOC), the ADOC must ensure provision of care in accordance with the Standard of Practice of the College of Nurses of Ontario and the Long Term Care Homes Act and Regulations 79/10.

  • Ensures and promotes the provision of resident centered care and services to meet the needs of the resident.
  • Ensure that resident and family needs are addressed and any concerns are handled and brought to the attention of the DOC.
  • Assists with the investigation and follow through of resident, family or staff concerns.
  • Supports opportunities for the resident/family participation in decisions that affect the resident’s rights and lifestyle.
  • Use quality tools to assist in determining root cause of issues and subsequent plans of improvement initiatives.
  • Fosters effective interpersonal relationships between residents, families and other interdisciplinary health team members.
  • Responsible for monitoring compliance through audits of the home, care, assessments, resident charts, care plans, MARS, and documentations.
  • Participate in recruitment, development, evaluation, discipline and termination of nursing staff.
  • Participate in performance appraisal process for staff.
  • Monitor and evaluate that nursing unit staff are compliant with Leisureworld’s policies and procedures and Ministry standards.
  • Provide continuing education programs to registered and non-registered staff on a monthly basis.
  • Participate in orientation process for employees
  • Act as a reliable member or chair on committees that impact this department.
  • Participate in the development of a program to monitor, evaluate and improve the quality of specialized nursing services on nursing units.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of policies and procedures related to nursing practice and infection control.
  • Participates in outbreak management and infection control practices.
  • Lead on infection control practice and staff education coordination as directed by Director of Care.
  • Assumes responsibility for the nursing service in the absence of the Director of Care.
  • Assists with the co-ordination of activities pertaining to the Accreditation Program.
  • Manages and coordinates the planning, implementation, and evaluation of a wide range of Rehabilitation/Restorative Programs, including but not limited to Dining Program, Walking Program, Wheelchair Mobility Program, ADLs, ROM, Strengthening, Fine Motor, 1:1, and small group fitness, based on resident needs.
  • Provides education to staff in relation to rehabilitation/restorative approach.
  • Oversees and/or assists in completing assessments, development and implementation and evaluation of care plans of residents to optimize the resident’s independence in activities of daily living.
  • Coordinates the Integrated Assessment reporting (IAR) as directed by the DOC.
  • Manages the MDS RAI Program, in conjunction with DOC, to ensure RAI MDS Program mandate, standards and needs are facilitated effectively and the program is optimized
  • Establish, maintain, and communicate current resident assessment schedule and expectations to the inter-professional team.
  • Review and analyze monthly, each resident’s RAI MDS to ensure accuracy of assessments and meeting of resident needs and that documentation reflects resident needs
  • Monitors and analyzes RAI outputs and reports and communicates with the DOC/Executive Director and corporate committees;
  • Establishes an effective process for auditing to ensure RAI MDS accuracy and compliance with coding, rapping and care plan updating
  • Provide RAI MDS 2.0 related education sessions
  • Provides all electronic documentation training, initial and ongoing to the inter-professional team
  • Ensures all RAI MDS 2.0 documentation is completed by the inter-professional team by the deadlines
  • Participation in inter-professional meetings for RAI MDS 2.0 purposes
  • Produce monthly reports by the due date, and distribute to team members
  • Producing RAI MDS reports to assist in clinical and operational decision-making.
  • Act as the Lead for which will include the following responsibilities:
    • Act as the point person for staff in supporting staff with their AIS related activities
    • Manage accounts for staff in AIS Central
    • Support staff learning needs in using AIS Mastering the RAI
    • Ensure staff complete their required AIS Proficiency Evaluations in a timely manner and provide support where needed
    • Run reports in AIS to inform ED/DOC of progress with Ministry mandated requirement for AIS Proficiency Evaluations
    • Identify RAI-MDS 2.0 areas that staff have good knowledge for coding and areas where improvement is needed
  • Liaises with senior level management to enhance best outcomes.
  • Participates in Quality and Improvement Initiatives
  • Participates in committees at the home and/or corporate level.
  • Maintain competency by attending/participating in educational sessions (i.e. CIHI education portal and annual AIS renewal)
  • Adhere to all RAI MDS 2.0 outlined time frames due to this process being time sensitive.
  • Sign off on records prior to submission to CIHI
  • Assumes responsibility for the computerized Data Submission process and maintaining records following each submission within the time frames outlined by Ministry of Health and Long Term Care (MOHLTC)
  • Tracks rejections and errors during submission process to CIHI and engages in corrections and re-submissions as per MOHLTC deadlines
  • Liaises as required with MOHLTC, CIHI, software vendor, Leisureworld and Preferred Health Informatics team 
  • Liaise with software vendor, IT department and Executive Director (ED) to follow up on hardware and software concerns.
  • Network with other ADOCs- RAI Rehab, corporate representatives, external consultants, etc. to build best practices.
  • Conducts MDS orientation for new employees
  • Comply with all Employee Responsibilities under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Successful annual completion of RAI MDS certification as per Ministry of Health requirements for AIS
  • 3 years’ experience in clinical nursing in a geriatric, long-term care, rehabilitation or chronic care setting.
  • Minimum of 3 years progressive management/leadership experience.
  • Considerable experience in supervising or directing registered and unregulated staff in a long term care environment.
  • Sound knowledge of Ministry of Health and Long Term Care program standards and ability to ensure compliance with these standards.
  • Strong communication skills both written and verbal required.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve complex problems, and work under pressure with a high degree of professionalism and diplomacy.
  • Demonstrated team building and mentorship experience.
  • Demonstrated commitment to learning and continuous quality improvement.
  • Proven ability to build effective relationships and work productively in a team environment.
  • Proficient computer skills.
  • Must have effective verbal and written English communication skills.
  • Bachelor of Science – Nursing or equivalent from an accredited university  or
  • Diploma in Registered Practical Nursing from an established college or equivalent
  • Current Gerontological Nursing Certificate, through the Canadian Nurses Association, is considered an asset
  • Current AIS Certification
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support Certification (BCLS).
